What Standard 1.5 expects
The expectation is that an RTO engages with industry in a way that keeps its training and assessment current and relevant to the needs of employers and the workplace — and that this engagement genuinely informs delivery. The key words are evidenced and influential: engagement you cannot show, or that never feeds back into your training, does not meet the intent.
Where RTOs get exposed
- Asserted, not evidenced. “We have strong industry links” with nothing on record.
- Engagement that changes nothing. Meetings happen, but training and assessment never reflect the input.
- Token consultation. A single annual contact treated as sufficient across the whole scope.
- No line to currency. Engagement disconnected from how trainers keep current and how products stay relevant.

How to close the gap
- Log every engagement. Who, when, what was discussed, and what it means for your training.
- Show the change. Record the specific updates to delivery, assessment or resources that flowed from the input.
- Spread it across scope. Engage relevant industry for the products you actually deliver, not just your flagship.
- Connect it to currency. Use engagement to keep trainers current and products relevant — and document that link.
Can you prove industry shaped your training?

Records of who you engaged, when, what was discussed, and — critically — what changed in your training, assessment or resources as a result. Evidence that engagement influenced delivery is the strongest form.
